Abstract:
The International Vaccine Institute (IVI) is concerned with the development, introduction and use of new and improved vaccines in developing countries. IVI believes these new vaccines should be developed through an interactive network composed of representatives of the sciences, the general public, the health sector, and business. IVI sees itself as a place for science in the public interest, and a meeting place where these interactions between concerned individuals and agencies can take place. IVI engages in research, training, technical assistance, service provision, and information dissemination. IVI sees a need for expanded research on the epidemiology and disease burden of infectious diseases in developing countries. IVI see a need, which they hope to help meet, for clinical centers in areas of high disease prevalence--clinics that can test new vaccines as they emerge from the laboratory. IVI would have these clinics conduct scientific trials which might result in regulatory approval. IVI find this approach a possible means for meeting the need for field testing sites that can assess how best to introduce new vaccines following licensure. Issues of production and regulation of new drugs are also of high priority at IVI. IVI has been located in Seoul following a site selection process initiated by the United Nations Development Program, and is governed by an independent board of trustees.
